Excerpt

The Witness

habits are important
It was dark      she was not afraid

three more blocks then cross
despite the strange car idling

light a cigarette at 6th and North
street lamp eating up the smoke      thank god
for legs that know your direction      the club just
a little further into the black massed buildings

and of course it is raining
a shake of damp curls and faster steps thank god
for strong legs and sinewed heels, she thinks
as if it makes a difference to the strange car
climbing the pavement

She wonders what she looks like illuminated
soft curls long coat hat just so      all stretched
out on the pavement
