What I Make Mine

Issue 1

January 2019

With the New Year comes resolve:  a commitment to take back the self.  Our inaugural issue "What I Make Mine" is a celebration of possession, a revelry in the elements that make us whole, a reclamation of the heart and the self.  Don't let anyone dim your shine--give the world your sparks!

This month's featured poet is Wanda Deglane.  Please view the commentary on Wanda's work here.

Issue 1 includes work by Ray Ball, Jane Murray Bird, Wanda Deglane, Marlin Figgins, Kristin Garth, Marilee Goad, Bára Hladíková, Elisabeth Horan, Justin Karcher, Akif Kichloo, Robert Okaji, and Bola Opaleke.  Please visit "The Gallery" below!  And Sarah Stockton is "Talkin' Back" to make it a baker's dozen.

Jennifer Mack-Watkins

Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Jennifer lives and works in New York and New Jersey.  Her work investigates societal conformities that isolate individuals to be confined to fit into a space. This space includes the complexities of being a woman, beauty images, relationships, body image, power, and gender roles.  The artwork for this issue is from Jennifer's installation titled "Urban Excavations."  Find Jennifer online at www.mackjennifer.com.

Talkin' Back

When I was a kid, my mom would often say to me, "That mouth is gonna get you in trouble."  Well, I ain't scared of trouble, and some things just need to be said!  I'm not the only one:  as we near the end of football season, Sarah Stockton reminds us of the rampant occurrences of domestic violence perpetrated by players that get covered up by money and fame.  Read Sarah's poem "Damage Control" and her commentary here.
