C. L. Martinez
As it is in Heaven
Excerpt
Fried Chicken & Coffee
I’ve seen God
Way more than any non-believer ought to.
And yet, in every felled pine
spilling waxy blood sap,
in the rolling boom
of overcast dead skies--
there—marrow deep
in a country fraught with bones,
in fried chicken and coffee
off the interstate, a small blessing
finds the leather prayers of people.
I guess even grey skies belong to God,
& he’s got the whole world
in His hands—allegedly.
I’ve seen God

And yet, in every felled pine
spilling waxy blood sap,
in the rolling boom
of overcast dead skies--
